Timer (Free Online Here)
Video to the left- (I cannot take credit for this lesson. This video inspired me to do this with my students.)
Colored pencils for each table |
Instructions.
Start a class conversation by asking "What do you need to be creative?" "What inspires creativity?"
Common Answers:
Brain, pencil, paper, environment, music, past experiences, etc
Only ONCE in 8th grade did someone say TIME!
So as they say pencils I give each table colored pencils. They say paper and I give each person a piece of colored paper, but asked them not to turn it over. (It has an image printed on it. You can print a copy above.) They say environment so I explain to them that I try to provide them with an inspirational classroom full of color, art materials, etc. They say music so I turn on music.
Then I ask what about time? When I turn on my projector I have a free online timer on the screen set to 10 Seconds. Most immediately notice the short amount of time, but I joke that they didn't say how much time... I explain when I say go they are to turn over their paper and have 10 seconds to be as creative as possible. Majority of them start to turn the image into a clock.
Rather quickly they realize 10 seconds isn’t long enough. So I gave them another colored piece of paper asking them again not to flip it over. I ask the class again "what do you need to be creative?" Generally now they say more time so I change the timer to 10 minutes. I remind them they must use the entire 10 minutes. As the timer begins they flip over their paper to see the 2nd paper has the same image. Given more time students will develop their ideas to further then a clock.
We talk about how important time is to creativity! How they need to put time into their artwork in order to be more creative! Students were shocked to be able to actually see the effect time has!
I then show this 2 min video. It explains it all. Usually before showing this I explain about Graphic Designers and what they do.

In 8th grade we further the conversation into "Does social media and staying connected hurt or help creativity?" It often turns into a pretty good debate about it!
